Napolitano sounds alarm over joblessness

P(ANSA) – Rimini, May 6 – President Giorgio Napolitano on Tuesday raised alarm over rising unemployment in Italy, and said the country would make boosting jobs central to its upcoming presidency of the European Union. “Job loss in the past five years, especially in the south, is worrisome, close to one million people (have been laid off),” said the head of State. “In addition to the alarming rate of youth unemployment are people in their 50s out of work, which raises the risk of serious social ruptures”. The OECD on Tuesday said Italy’s unemployment rate for 2014 is projected to be 12.8%, up from 12.2% last year, and will not begin to slowly come down until 2015. Meanwhile youth unemployment is well over 40%, and over 50% in the south. “During our six-month duty presidency, we’ll work towards policies that benefit job growth more than those already in place, which have rightfully aimed at balancing public finances…and sparked a recession,” said Napolitano, after meeting with Slovenian President Borut Pahor in Rome.BR/P
