Italy determined to seek EU help on immigration

Italy determined to seek EU help on immigration (ANSA) – Brussels, October 24 – Italy will be firm in trying to change the EU’s attitude on immigration, Italian Premier Enrico Letta said on Thursday ahead of a two-day meeting of European Union leaders to discuss a range of issues including the migrant crisis.

On immigration ”we want the European Council to focus on giving a response” said the premier.

“We will adopt a very firm stance: we want the EU to change its attitude on the issue”.

At least 400 migrants died off the Sicilian island of Lampedusa in two separate ship wrecks earlier this month as they were trying to reach Italy from North Africa, prompting the government’s demand for greater help from the EU in dealing with the crisis.

Letta said such disasters must nor recur.
